KILBEHENNY 

ON THE ROAD TO ANGLESBORO 

A BEAUTIFUL LITTLE CEMETERY

Since 1973 I've been poring over the graves in the Kilbehenny cemetery. In the rain, the sleet and sometimes the sun, I've searched for those ancestors. I wonder if they ever imagined a descendant from Australia would be enduring the Galtee elements in search of a name and a date?

Although there are two Cleary graves in Kilbehenny Cemetery, I've not found the grave of my great great grandparents Michael Cleary and Mary Martin, or that of his second wife, Mary Leary.

The parish of Kilbeheny (Kilbehenny), which is also known as Kilbenny, lies 4 miles E.N.E. of Mitchelstown, Co. Cork adjoining the border with county Limerick.

 

Thanks to the Rev Wallace Clare we know a lot more about this beautiful little cemetery with the rapidly fading stones.

Erected by James Buckly of Fermoy in memory of his beloved wife Ellen Buckly deceased March 8th, 1818, aged 41 years. The above Buckly dec. . . . . . . aged. . . . yrs. (Blank spaces never filled in). May they rest in peace. Amen.

CASEY.

Lord, have mercy 0!'. the soul of Will'm Casey of Gerah who departed this life 16 Aug., 1841, aged 63 years. Also his wife Elizabeth Casey, alias Tobin, departed the 13th Jan. 1842, aged 55 years. Erected by their son Patrick Casey.

John Cleary of Beehenagh lies in the plot under the leaning white stone in the foreground. This stone was set by his son William. The leaning stone in the background behind the upright white stone is that of Patrick Cleary, of Loughaun (sic). This stone was set by his son Thomas. These Clearys must surely have been related. See details below.

This stone was erected by William Dwire in memory of his wife Mary Kiely who died May 27th, 1780, aged 26 years.

DWORTY.

O Lord have mercy on the souls of Darby Dworty who died June 18th, 1774, aged 55 years. Also Honora his daughter who died March 17th, 1784, aged 32 years. Erected by Catherine his wife.

Erected by Honora Dwyer in memory of her uncle the Rev. Roger O'Dwyer (sic), P.P. of Kildorrery who died March 25th, 1795. Also her brother Roger Dwyer died Nov. 18, 1833. May they rest in peace. Amen.

Here lieth the body of James Dwyer of Cerok who departed May. . ., 1799, aged 50. Also his sister Anne Picknet who departed June 6th, 1797, aged 56 years.

Erected by John Finn of Mitchelstown in memory of his father Patrick Finn deceased Feb. Ilth, 1791, aged 73 years. Also his son Edm'd deceased May 14th, 1786. (Rest of inscription buried).

Erected by Ellen O'Brien in memory of her father James FitzGerald (who) departed October 4th, 1791, aged 52 years. John her brother dec'd March 14th, 1794, aged 21 years. Also her brother William deceased June lOth, 1810, aged 41 years. May they rest in peace. Amen.

Erected by William FitzGerald in memory of his father Maurice FitzGerald of Boher who died March 22nd, 1811, aged 49 (?).

Maurice Fitzgerald lies under the little white stone behind the Celtic Cross. Boher is due north of the cemetery. The leaning stone to the left on the edge of the frame is that of Patrick Cleary, of Loughaun (sic) John Cleary of Beehenagh is a couple of metres away to the left of the cross alongside the Mullins plot.

Erected by Catherine FitzGerald of Kilglass in memory of her husband David FitzGerald who departed Jan. 17th, 1851, aged 70 years. Also her son David departed Feb. 12, 1849.

Erected by Thomas Gallahoo of Anglesborough in memory of his son Denis Gallaghoo who departed this life Jan. 24, 1830, aged 21 years. Also his beloved wife Eliza Gallaghoo who departed this life June 17th, 1837, aged 48 years.

WHERE ARE MY CLEARYS BURIED?

Under a row decaying stones in the old BRIGOWN cemetery in Mitchelstown, alongside their Howard neighbours, are buried a number of Clearys. Was this Denis the father of Michael Cleary from the Boro Road? I wish I knew.

Erected by Denis Cleary of Kilbehenny, in memory of his father Michael, who departed Nov 28 1794, aged 64.  Also mother Margaret alias Kelly died April 20th 1827, aged 83. And his wife Mary nee Flanagan Depd Jan 5 1825 aged 44 years. Eleanor Cleary  Here lyeth the body of Eleanor Cleary who departed this life March 12 1747  AD aged 32 years. Mary Cleary  Hear (sic) under lies the body of Mary Cleary who departed this life the 26th of August 1760 aged 13 years.

 

In my notes from a trip in 1973 I recorded the names: Ellen Cleary (mother) Mary Cleary. Stone by Laurence Cleary and family 1972.  However I can find no sign of these. Maybe they were from another cemetery!

In the old Mitchelstown cemetery I found this: Erectd by John Cleary in memory of his son Maurice Cleary Decsd Nov ? 1855 aged 30? years
